A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions. Sudden Shift in Forecasts Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been seized. One account, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000. The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification. Odds Fluctuate Before News Break Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event. However the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made. "This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher. Several of other traders also profited large payouts from similar wagers. Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges Some lawmakers are growing concerned. A new rule introduced on recently aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager. Market Background Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs. The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency. Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry. A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
