The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the points lead from Piastri by just one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in the points battle, lying with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he lost control at the fourth corner early in the session. The Japanese slid over the curbs on exit before sliding over the escape zone, and was blessed to avoid just a minor contact of the wall. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the conclusion of the session, spinning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The veteran finished practice in 19th place, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs slower than the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
